Woman Forced from Federal Building for Wearing Lesbian T-Shirt
As an African-American and a lesbian, 31-year-old Lapriss Gilbert says she is used to experiencing discrimination on a daily basis. On Monday, however, she found herself the target of hate from an entirely unexpected direction. While Gilbert was visiting a federal building in Van Nuys, California, she was forcibly ejected by a security guard because he found her apparel offensive. Gilbert was wearing a t-shirt promoting the website Lesbian.com.

One Day at a Time Star Mackenzie Phillips Allegedly Busted for Coke and Heroin at LAX
Has Mackenzie Phillips pulled a Tatum O’Neal? The former One Day at a Time star and supposedly recovering addict was busted at Los Angeles International Airport on cocaine and heroin possession Wednesday morning, according to TMZ.com. The actress, who has battled drugs since her sitcom days in the seventies, is the daughter of Mamas and Papas founder and singer John Phillips.

Legendary Lesbian Activist Del Martin Dies
Legendary lesbian activist Del Martin died on Wednesday morning at the age of 87. Her lifelong partner Phyllis Lyon, whom she married legally at last in California in June, was by her side. Martin and Lyon co-founded the nation’s first national advocacy group for lesbians, the Daughters of Bilitis, in 1955. Martin and Lyon were the first same-sex couple to legally wed in San Francisco on June 16 in a ceremony officiated by Mayor Gavin Newsome at City Hall.

Possible Barack Obama Assassination Attempt Foiled by Police
A possible assassination attempt on presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama may have been foiled quite by accident. On Monday, Denver police made a lucky traffic stop when they pulled over a man identified as Tharin Robert Gartrell for driving a rental truck erratically. Inside the truck, officers found two high-powered rifles, a bulletproof vest and other gear. Authorities quickly uncovered a conspiracy between Gartrell and several other suspects to kill Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention.

NBC Refutes Censorship in Coverage of Olympic Gay Diver Matthew Mitcham
NBC is denying they intentionally used censorship in the network's coverage of Olympic gold medalist Matthew Mitcham. In a shocking upset, the openly gay diver took home a gold medal in the 10-meter platform event at the Beijing Olympics, beating out the Chinese favorites. Despite intensive coverage of other gold medalist’s personal lives during the Games, NBC failed to mention Mitcham was gay, or show footage of the diver’s partner cheering him on and congratulating him after the win.

Songwriter Kara DioGuardi Tapped as New American Idol Judge
Grammy Award-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi has been tapped to join Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell as a judge on the next season of American Idol. The new American Idol judge will take her place at the critiquing table for the eighth season of the hit show, which is set to premiere in January on Fox. Thirty-seven year-old DioGuardi has penned songs for such top tier artists as Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne.

Dancing With the Stars Cast Announced on Good Morning America
The new cast for season seven of Dancing With the Stars was finally announced on ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday—and gay and lesbian fans are going to have a blast with this go-around. The new season will include such well-known names as singer Toni Braxton, former ‘N Sync member Lance Bass, Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor and Award-winning soap diva Susan Lucci. Despite rumors, however, openly gay singer Lance Bass will be paired with Lacey Schwimmer—not a professional male dancer.

NBC Censors Family of Gay Gold Medalist Matthew Mitcham
The world watched with awe as out gay diver Matthew Mitcham brought home the gold medal for Australia on the 10-meter platform this past weekend. In an interview found on YouTube.com, a gracious Mitcham thanks his mom, as well as his long-time partner, Lachlan. However, despite intensive coverage by NBC of other Olympic athletes' families, NBC did not include any mention of Mitcham's partner in the network's coverage of his gold medal win.

Making news around the globe, the legal rights and recognition of gays & lesbians is becoming manifested in the definition of marriage. More and more companies and communities across the US are recognizing the union of two gay men or women in terms of civil unions or domestic partnerships, granting them the same basic rights as heterosexual married couples. Health insurance benefits, estate planning and more are becoming commonplace in many gay & lesbian lives, but not all. The right of marriage, however, along with all of its legal and tax implications, is the final goal for many gays & lesbians. It would be society's way of showing that once and for all gays & lesbians are now deemed equal in the eyes of the law.

NBJC Hires Connecticut State Representative as Deputy Director
Jason Bartlett was the first openly gay African American state legislator. His publicly 'coming out' story in February 2008, created tremendous interest and had a positive impact on perceptions of the African American LGBT population. NBJC assisted Jason with his public 'coming out' and distributed an exclusive interview for the national media at the time.

GLBT Leaders & Organizations Make Their Mark at Democratic National Convention
The 2004 Convention included many passionate discussions, particularly around Transgender inclusion in the DNC platform, and the unfortunate decision to uninvite Margaret Cho to a GLBT convention event. Such controversy is not expected to pop at at this year's convention, particularly with a DNC draft platform that specifically mentions gender identity protections and is strong overall on GLBT issues.
